Downtown Updates

June 2010

We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day on May 8 for the Pots N Pedals Festival. There were about 40 excited kids that participated in the Tractor Pull, and 28 cars in the Pedal to the Metal Car Show. Thank you to all our sponsors and volunteers for making the day a success!

The Main Street Sterling Design Committee worked very hard and put in about 190 hours of time preparing for the Ginormous Garage Sale that was held in conjunction with Pots N Pedals. They were able to donate proceeds of $1967.07 to Studio 96 for the purchase of tables and chairs. We appreciate all those that donated items for the sale: Alice & Royce Mattson, Debra Randolph-Zwick, Jill & Mac Stromberg, Walt Benson, Barbara & Dave Benson, Chris Sillin, Dick Walker, Sharlyn & Rusty Thode, Fran Eckhoff, Kathie Keimig, Christi Gilmore, Scott Randolph, Jim Haggerty, Deborah Walker, Lynn Landis, and Steve & Wanda Childs. A special thank you to Studio 96 volunteers: Alice & Royce Mattson, Susie & Jim Unruh, Cynthia Morton, Fred Gilmore, and Barb & Dave Benson.

The Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration will be here very soon. The celebration will begin on July 3 and finish up July 4 with the fireworks. A complete schedule is available on the Chamber of Commerce website. www.sterling-kansas.org

Quentin Eason, Sterling College chef, has taken over the Sterling Farmer’s Market this summer. It will be held on Saturday mornings in the sunken garden at Sterling College, corner of Broadway and Cleveland. Quentin is currently working with vendors, and is expecting the first market to take place in late June. For more information or to be a vendor contact Quentin at 278-4248 or Quentin.eason@yahoo.com.

Downtown Sterling will soon be getting a new look! Hedrick’s Landscaping is in the process of clearing out the bulbouts throughout downtown in preparation for NEW landscaping. I am so excited to see the new plantings, and I know a lot of others are too. In addition to the flowerpots that adorn the sidewalks, the landscaping will really make Sterling come “alive” again. Keep visiting downtown to see the progress.
